Megadeth Biography

The American heavy metal group Megadeth was established in 1983 in Los Angeles, California by Dave Ellefson and Dave Mustaine following Mustaine being kicked out of Metallica. Megadeth has released a total of 13 studio albums and were a pioneer in the thrash metal movement. During the 1980s the band became internationally famous and considered one of thrash metal's big four along with Slayer, Anthrax and Metallica.

Over the past 30 years Metallica has had more than 20 different band members. The only member that has been constant is Mustaine. Current band members are Dave Mustaine (lead vocalist, guitar), Chris Broderick (backing vocals, guitar), Shawn Drover (percussion, drums) and Dave Ellefson (backing vocals, bass). The band is known for their trade-off guitar solos as well as distinct, technical instrumental sound, often featuring intricate, dense passages. Megadeth's recurring lyrical themes include religion, personal relationships, addiction, war and politics. The band has sold more than 48 million worldwide albums. Megadeth has had six albums in a row be multi-platinum or platinum in the U.S. The band has been nominated for ten Grammy Awards.

Megadeth released "Killing Is My Business," their debut album, in 1985. The album blended speed metal and thrash and was well received. In 1986 the band released "Peace Sells," their second album. It was the band's critical and commercial breakthrough. The album sold over one million U.S. copies and became one of the most highly influential thrash metal albums. The band's third album, "So Far, So Good, So What," was released in 1988 but was panned by music critics. "Rust in Peace," the band's fourth album, was released in 1990. "Countdown to Extinction," the band's most commercially successful set, was released in 1992. It peaked in the No. 2 spot on Billboard's 200 chart. Their 1994 album "Youthanasia" peaked in the No. 4 spot on Billboard's 200 chart. Both "Countdown to Extinction" and "Youthanasia were certified paltinum. Megadeth's most recent album, "Thirteen," was released in 2011.
