311 Biography

The American rock band 311 was established in 1988 in Omaha, Nebraska by Nick Hexum (rhythm guitarist/vocalist), Jim Watson (lead guitarist), who was replaced later by Tim Mahoney, Aaron "P-Nut" Wills (bassist) and Chad Sexton (drummer). Doug "SA" Martinez (turntables, vocalist) joined the band in 1992 to complete their current line-up.

The band, to date, has released one live album, eleven studio albums, four compilation albums, four DVDs and four EPs. In 1992 311 signed a deal with Capricorn Records, after several independent releases. In 1993 they released "Music" and in 1993 "Grassroots." The albums were both moderately successful. Their 1995 self-titled triple platinum album achieved even greater success. It peaked in the No. 12 spot on Billboard's 200 chart, led by the singles "All Mixed Up" and "Down." In 1996 "Down" topped Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart.

The next three albums from the band, 1997's "Transistor," 1999's "Soundsystem" and 2001's "From Chaos" were not as successful as their self-titled album. However they still did achieve some success. "Transistor" was certified platinum and the latter two went gold. "Greatest Hits 93-02," their compilation album released in 2004, was certified gold as well. The last studio album from the band is "Universal Pulse," which is set to be released in July 2011. To date, 311 has sold more than 8 million worldwide records.
