2013 Monterey Jazz Festival Showcases Diana Krall, Wayne Shorter

Continuing a long tradition of great lineups, the 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival will feature Diana Krall and Wayne Shorter, among many others.

In fact, the festival promises to pack a whopping 500 artists into the three days of the festival, which will be September 20-22 this year. As it had from the very beginning, the event will be held at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California.

Other performers at the event include Bobby McFerrin, George Benson, Kevin Eubanks, Bob James with David Sanborn, Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, Gregory Porter, Prism and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.

Though the festival has long been known for booking some of the best talent in the world, it would be hard to top the inaugural event that started everything in 1958. Among others, that bill included Billie Holliday, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck and Sonny Rollins.

In addition to the festival this year, the Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour is currently going around the country to celebrate the 55th year of the event. The tour features a group including the great vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. Other musicians are Christian McBride, Benny Green, Lewis Nash, Chris Potter and Ambrose Akinmusire.

The second leg of the tour is in full swing and will kick off a six night residency at the Blue Note in New York later tonight, April 2. Each night consists of two shows, and the group will be at the venue until April 7.

After that, they will stay on the road through an April 30 appearance in Santa Cruz, and before that they will visit West Palm Beach, Florida; St. Louis; Germantown, Tennessee; Salt Lake City, Utah and Anchorage, among others.

Tickets for the event go on sale next month, and start $40 for single day tickets and $125 for weekend passes. However, these lower tier prices only provide access to some of the stages at the festival.
